Finally, one of the most requested tutorials on my themes: The Custom Icons and Dark Theme for Windows 10!
In this tutorial, I will show you step-by-step, How To Change Windows 10 Icons and Use a Dark Theme on Windows 10. For this, you will not need to install any programs as that is something that can possibly slow down the start-up (boot) time and some performance. So there's nothing to worry about!
A small Disclaimer, before you start doing this on your computer. This is not an official theme by Microsoft, but a collection of 3rd-party visual styles and icons, that are available to download for public. Moreover, you should ONLY do this if you know what you're doing. DO NOT try this if you're not good with computers in general as failure to follow the steps can lead to damage and possible loss of data. So I will not take any responsibility of that. Last thing, this will ONLY work on Windows 10 1909. It might work on an older build version such as 1903, but I have only tested this on build 1909. Other than that, it's pretty easy and safe as long as you know what you're doing.

Instructions
For detailed instructions, I would strongly recommend watching and following the video above. However, I here are the basic steps that you may follow in case you're stuck:
STEP 1:
Download and Extract the theme zip package. Use 7-zip as we will need it later as well.
Note: Download links are below at the end of the post.STEP 2:
Open the extracted folder, and go to Theme Files Folder. This is where you will find all the things needed for this tutorial.
STEP 3:
Go to the 1. UltraUXThemePatcher folder, and rename the file to remove the .ee from the end. Extract this file using 7-zip, and install.
STEP 4:
Similarly, go to the 2. Icon Pack folder, and rename the file to change the .ee to .exe from the end. Now install this file. It will ask you to make a Restore Point, proceed. Be patient, this will take some time to install.
STEP 5: (OPTIONAL)
Now go to the 3. Change Navigation Pane Icons folder, and open RegOwnershipEx Win10 folder inside it. From there, open the folder x86 (for 32-Bit Windows) or x64 (for 64-Bit Windows). After that, rename the file RegOwnershipEx.ex_ to RegOwnershipEx.exe, and run it as an administrator. Now one by one, copy each of the following lines and click Take Ownership:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}\DefaultIcon
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\WOW6432Node\CLSID\{679f85cb-0220-4080-b29b-5540cc05aab6}\DefaultIcon
Once the ownership permission is given, go back to the 3. Change Navigation Pane Icons, and run the following files: Quick Access-New.reg and OneDrive-New.reg.
STEP 6:
Go to the 4. Dark Theme (Dev) folder. Inside, copy the folder Dev, and paste it in the folder that says Paste Dev Here.... After that, go to your desktop and right-click. Now click on Personalize and go to Themes tab from the sidebar. From there, scroll down and click on the theme Dev (Rounded) (or Dev) to apply the dark theme.
STEP 7: (Optional)
Go to the 5. OldNewExplorer folder. Rename the file OldNewExplorer.7z.ee to OldNewExplorer.7z, and extract this file. Run the file OldNewExplorerCfg.exe as administrator, and check the boxes as follows: (the click Install)
STEP 8:
Finally, go to the 6. Wallpaper folder. Right-click on the Wallpaper.png file, then click Set as desktop background.
STEP 9:
This step is for changing the mouse cursor. Go to the start menu and type mouse. Click Mouse Settings. Under the Related Settings, click Additional mouse options. Now a window will open. Go to the Pointers tab, and from the drop-down list, select Windows Default (system scheme). Hit Apply and the cursor should be back to normal.
STEP 10:
That's all! Reboot your PC and you should have the best looking dark theme on your windows 10!
How do I return the icons to their default shape
ReplyDeletesome part of dark theme doesn't work after windows resume from sleep or hibernate like background for .txt files or control panel or even IDM background and i have to open theme again to fix it.is there any kind of fix for this?
ReplyDeleteWhy My File explorer is not get rounded
ReplyDeletethe rounded shape is not working on my pc
Dev round is not working
everything looks good, applied this theme flawlesssly...
ReplyDeleteand then trouble comes, my excel sheet is dark background and nothing I can do to make it white as default..
any workaround on this?
Unfortunately, this is not an official theme which is why some apps are not compatible with it. Most of the time restarting the computer solves the problem.
DeleteWhy My File explorer is not get rounded, what's happing!!!?
ReplyDeleteme too
DeleteHow do i unistall this? i love it, but my excel has colors all wrong now and i cant work. trying to but another Theme, but excel wont change.
ReplyDeleteGo to Start Menu and type "add or remove programs". Click on the first option. In the search list box, type "Aon" and uninstall it. Now your icons should be back to original. Change the theme from desktop and apply default windows theme.
Deleteso my file explorer doesnt look like yours, it is dark but it doesnt have the same ribbon or color and idea why the dev round didnt apply the same stuff to mine? any contact i could get to you to try and solve this?
ReplyDeleteI'm still trying to figure out why this is happening to some people. I will post the solution here (or in the post) once I get it.
DeleteMouse cursor changes on powerup....
ReplyDeletehi, I install this icons now i want to back my default icons.
ReplyDeleteHow can I get that
how to properly uninstall this?
ReplyDeleteMy taskbar icons and sizing is all messed up now, It doesn't margin to the left like how it looks in your video everything is centered which is fine but when I have applications pinned to the taskbar which I have about 5 or 6 the boundaries for those apps are huge...
ReplyDeleteLeaving no room for other apps or open things. :\ Followed all steps exactly, and am on proper build version.
If you go to Nexus Dock's settings, you can customize a lot of things as you like, including icon sizes and icon spacing. As different resolutions will result in different appearances of it, there isn't much I can do on my end. Although it should look exactly the same as mine on a 1920x1080 display.
Deletestep 2 mirrors option isnt there??
ReplyDeleteDownload mirrors are at the end of the post. (Blue Download Buttons)
DeleteWhen I first installed this theme, everything was working as expected. I opened a few system apps such as Task Manager and Control Panel and I was happy to see that all of them had the dark theme. But then a little bit later (I'm pretty sure it happened during the same session, i.e. I did not restart the system whatsoever) I noticed that the Task Manager and the Control Panel looked really weird. They still had the dark theme but some parts of the window were white. For instance in the Control Panel, when I click on the System and Security page, the left side of the page with options is all white, and the text is hard to read. Same goes for any page in the Control Panel. As for the task manager, this is a weird one because sometimes it looks as expected, but sometimes the whole processes list is white, while the top ribbon is dark. This can be blinding sometimes as the contrast is pretty high (for me at least.) The same can be said for the performance tab. It's weird. I'm hoping there's a fix. Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeleteHi, this problem is known to exist as a glitch. It happens usually when the computer wakes from sleep or something similar. The Fix is simple: Restart your computer or re-apply the theme.
DeleteI hope this will help 🙂
